A personal note from the CEO
Dear Friends,
As you may recall, just two months ago, I shared with you great news about the unveiling of the industry’s first commercial grade TD-LTE small cell reference design by ASTRI and Mindspeed Inc at Mobile World Congress 2012 in Barcelona, Spain. Today, I am happy to update you on further exciting breakthrough in our pursuit.
ASTRI’s LTE USB dongle was deployed by ZTE to complete the world’s first two-way packet switch handover between LTE FDD and TDD modes last month. The test has undoubtedly laid a good foundation for seamless communications between different LTE modes in the future. While absolutely thrilled in seeing that ASTRI was able to contribute to another important milestone in the telecommunications history, I am immensely proud of our R&D team and their remarkable achievements.
Meanwhile, it is indeed my pleasure to report that ASTRI has concluded another year of satisfactory progress and achievements, which ended on 31 March 2012. In brief, ASTRI undertook 78 R&D projects and signed 82 contracts with industry partners for technology transfers during the year. We also maintained the same level of income from industry at HK60.9 million. In terms of intellectual properties, we were granted over 100 new patents while another 100 applications have been filed. ASTRI also achieved considerable success in our commercialization efforts.
I am personally convinced that if we and other R&D centres alike truly care for the environment and the people, we should aim at delivering technologies that are innovative, constructive and marketable. Hence, green technology and e-health have become the two new key focuses of our work. I am delighted to tell you that the Concentrating Photovoltaic module for solar energy developed by MPT Group recently won the GigaWatt Gold Award in the Top 10 Highlights competition held on the Mainland. In e-health, we have recently embarked on a new project with the world renowned Imperial College London, to jointly develop a new generation of extra low-power body sensors for sport and healthcare purposes.
These projects marked a most welcome and promising start in our latest technological pursuits. I will keep you all closely informed of the latest progress in the coming issues.
