Large display platform is a main research direction in MPT which includes large-sized LED backlight, high dynamic range (HDR) display-active dynamic LED backlight, interactive display including touch/multi-touch and intelligent displays, and intelligent audience analysis (IAA). With these platform technologies, MPT has been developing innovative applications for home TV and digital signage displays to create additional value and competitiveness.

The platform has filed more than 40 US patents and received four major global awards, including:
  • 2006 Product Innovation Award, National Solid State Lighting (SSL) Innovation Contest, China
  • 2008 Outstanding Poster Paper Award, International Display Workshop (IDW), Japan
  • 2009 Merck Award for Outstanding Scientifi c Contribution to the Display Technology (IMID), Korea

Large-Sized LED Backlight

Through unique optical, thermal and electrical integration design, a solution for large-sized LED backlight for LCD TV and digital signage display applications has been developed. The solution targets at achieving slim form factor, high optical effi ciency, effi cient thermal management and low-cost system integration.

Technologies for Transfer
  • Thin direct emitting LED backlight using 1st or 2nd optical lens design:
    • Reduce light mixing distance >50%
    • Cost-effective and fl exible
  • Large-sized light guide plate design for side emitting LED backlight
  • High-brightness LED backlight for outdoor display:
    • Available for >2,000 nits display
    • Effective thermal management system
    • Sunlight readable
  • Ultra-thin double-sided display module:
    • Single backlight module with double-sided light emitting
    • Ultra-thin display module (<15 mm)


High Dynamic Range (HDR) Display – Active Dynamic LED

Backlight The platform has developed high dynamic range (HDR) LCD display technology using active dynamic LED backlighting to overcome LCD display problems. Using novel ambient adaptive image processing algorithms, the platform has achieved high dynamic range, high contrast, unlimited colour depth and colour gamut with low-power consumption.

Technologies for Transfer
  • Ambient adaptive dynamic LED backlight technology:
    • Adaptive RGB local dimming (3D dimming)
    • Grey level local dimming (2D Dimming)
    • Side emitting LED backlight local dimming (2D Dimming)
    • Line scanning local dimming (1-D Dimming)
    • Whole backlight dimming (0-D Dimming)
  • Features:
    • Low-cost FPGA
    • Flexible algorithm for various backlight design
    • Ambient adaptive (>50% power-saving)
    • Brightness preservation, no visible halo defect or flicking

Interactive Display – Touch and Multi-touch

MPT has developed a high-performance touch-sensing and multi-touch screen system for large-sized displays (LCD, plasma or projector). The touch screen can accurately resolve multiple simultaneous touch inputs allowing multiple users to interact with the display.

Technologies for Transfer
  • By 2010, a multi-touch sensing system was developed with the following specifications:
    • Optical sensing module
    • <6 mm for <47” display
    • <10 mm for >52” display
    • Resolution: ±3 mm
    • Response speed: 120 Hz
    • Interface: USB 2.0 (full speed), HID compliant
    • Power supply: USB-powered
    • Operation systems (driver free): Window XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7
    • Multi-touch: Multiple users inputs and gestures (zoom in/out, rotation)


Intelligent Display – Intelligent Audience Analysis (IAA)

The platform aims at combining intelligent audience analysis (IAA) system and display to develop intelligent display platform for smart home TV and next generation digital signage display applications.

Technologies for Transfer
  • Audience presence and watching status detection algorithms and control module:
    • Detection status: audience presence, audience watching status, audience distance
    • Detection speed: 30 frames per second & accuracy: >95% (by 2010)
  • Adaptive display content selection:
    • Sorting of advertisement content according to relativeness with current audience
    • Content changing mechanism and strategy
  • Detection methods of age, gender, facial expression and professional features:
    • Detection status: male or female
    • Detection speed: fi ve frames per second and accuracy: >80% (by 2010)
  • Hand gesture tracking algorithms and gesture remote control system
