MIMO's Promise

Higher data rates are increasingly necessary in wireless communications systems that provide multimedia services. Therefore, higher spectral efficiency is essential. MIMO (Multiple-Input Multiple-Output) is one of the most promising enabling technologies which has been widely employed in new generation wireless systems such as LTE, WiMAX (IEEE802.16e/802.16m) and WiFi (IEEE802.11n).

Why MIMO

  • MIMO has appeared in literature for a long time.
  • It opens a new dimension to improve spectrum efficiency.
  • As shown in the figure, the channel capacity is almost linear to the number of antennas (when <= 10).
  • MIMO technologies have been the key in many of the latest technologies such as WiFi, WiMAX, HSPA+ and LTE.

Technology Challenges in MIMO

MIMO implementation is still facing a lot of challenges. For example, given small form factor of terminal, multiple antennas become highly correlated with each other and isolation is pool. As a result, MIMO system performance will be degraded. Another example is that with the usage of multiple antennas, there are tens of possible transmission modes. A good algorithm for mode selection is necessary for system performance.

ASTRI is developing MIMO technologies and taking practical limitations into consideration. Key factors, such as form factor, size, complexity, power consumption and cost, are integrated in our intellectual property rights development.

ASTRI's Achievements in Practical MIMO Core Technologies

Theoretically, MIMO capacity and spectral efficiency grows linearly with the number of transmitting and receiving antennas. In reality and practically, there are numerous technical challenges to implement practical and efficient MIMO system on a handheld device, and only limited achievements have been made to overcome them so far.

ASTRI's Practical MIMO Core is characterized by its compact form factor, low complexity, low power consumption and low cost. Its IP covers optimal placement of multiple elements, intelligent and efficient signal processing for joint optimization, and cost-effective RF section realization platforms.
