Developing a caring and digitally connected society

Focusing on the theme “IT Challenges in a Caring and Digitally Connected Society”, the Hong Kong International Computer Conference (HKICC) was held in the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre on 28-29 September 2010.

The international IT conference called for joint efforts from the government, ICT practitioners, business enterprises, the academia and the community to sculpture a digitally connected society that is caring and sustaining by bridging the digital gap and prevent the possible marginalisation of parts of the population, especially the aged and the underprivileged.

Dr Cheung Nim-kwan, CEO of ASTRI was invited to be the Programme Committee Chairperson. While giving an introduction of the conference program at the opening ceremony, he said, “The theme of HKICC2010 on cultivating a digitally connected and caring society is truly meaningful yet a very broad topic. The programme committee, after careful consideration, has agreed to give priority to areas that are worthy of our immediate attention and proactive action. They include e-Learning, e-Health, Environment, Green ICT, and Security, Privacy and Trust. We are honoured to have invited some of the best and most influential experts to give talks and tackle the issues from their professional viewpoints.”

About 40 prominent speakers including representatives from international conglomerates IBM, Hewlett Packard, Huawei Technologies, Microsoft, and Oracle spoke in the conference. Other speakers include academics from universities, elites from many private and public organizations, government officials and, technologists and senior executives from international conglomerates.
 
Many interesting topics were presented in the conference, for examples, Mr Albert Cheng Jing-han, Chairman of Senior Citizen Home Safety Association presented his award winning project “Personal Emergency Link Service” and Dr Rebecca Lee Lok-sze, Founder of China Polar Museum shared her experience in the “Poles Expedition”. ASTRI’s CTO Prof. Peter Yum and VPGD Dr Chao Shen-chang showed their support to the IT caring initiatives by chairing various plenary sessions.

HKICC is an annual international IT conference organized by the Hong Kong Computer Society. HKICC2010 is the thirty-third year of the conference. Over 500 participants took part in the event.
