IEEE Board of Directors visit Hong Kong and Shenzhen
(Hong Kong, 19 January 2012) The Board of Directors of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), which is the world’s largest professional association of engineers, held its board meeting in Hong Kong for the first time last week. They also attended the 40th anniversary banquet of IEEE’s Hong Kong Chapter on 13 January. The IEEE Directors, arranged by Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute (ASTRI), also visited the Shenzhen Municipal People’s Government and several corporations in both Shenzhen and Hong Kong to gain further understanding of the developments of the technology industries in the two cities.
The IEEE delegation, led by President Dr Gordon Day and accompanied by ASTRI’s Chief Executive Officer Dr Cheung Nim-kwan, called on the Shenzhen Government on 11 January. They were received by Mayor Dr Xu Qin and Vice Mayor Mr Chen Biao. The parties exchanged views on enhancing collaboration on the developments of technologies and professional talents and also explored on the protection of intellectual properties. The delegation was deeply impressed by Shenzhen’s rapid economic and societal development in recent years.
While in Shenzhen, the IEEE Directors also visited Shenzhen High-tech Industrial Park (SHIP), Shenzhen Mindray Bio-medical Electronics Co. Ltd. and Shenzhen BYD Auto Co. Ltd. Through these visits, the delegation was able to witness firsthand the city’s steadfast efforts to transform into a knowledge-based and international metropolis, where enterprises are pursuing technological innovation for further advances in the global markets.
The IEEE delegation’s stay in Hong Kong also took them to ASTRI, Hong Kong Science Park and Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. Representatives of the three institutes held in-depth exchanges with the visitors, especially on the technology outlook and talent cultivation in Hong Kong. During their visit at ASTRI, the latest development of the institute’s 4G wireless communications technology was introduced. The IEEE Directors also shared invaluable insights with the ASTRI’s R&D staff.
At the anniversary banquet of IEEE’s Hong Kong Chapter, two distinguished researchers from ASTRI, Dr Wang Keh-chung and Dr Wu Enboa, together with the latest batches of the IEEE Fellows from Hong Kong, were presented with IEEE Fellow Certificate by Dr Day.
