ASTRI wins major awards at National SSL Innovation Contest

[Hong Kong, 29 November 2010] The Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute (ASTRI) has won three major awards with its innovative technologies in the 2010 Nanhai Cup National Solid State Lighting (SSL) Innovation Contest organised by China Solid State Lighting Alliance (CSA), the most recognized authority in LED industry in China.

At the award presentation ceremony held concurrently with the 7th China International Forum on Solid State Lighting at Shenzhen Convention and Exhibition Centre on 15 October 2010, ASTRI’s outstanding achievements in LED technology development were repeatedly applauded.

Ms Anna Liu, Project Manager of the Material and Packaging Technologies Group, receives a Product Innovation Award on ASTRI’s behalf.

The Institute’s chemical mechanical fabrication technology for sapphire substrate removal in LED production was honoured with a Product Innovation Award in the chip, device and packaged products category. With ASTRI’s unique, patent-protected chemical mechanical polishing method, sapphire substrate can be completely removed from epi-wafer. This is a critical process in the production of high-power GaN vertical chips.

Another Product Innovation Award went to ASTRI for its pioneering technology in the design of dual mode 3D pico-projector. ASTRI’s 3D pico-projector, which allows switching between 2D and 3D images, is the first of its kind in the world to become commercialised. The integrated design features an ultra-compact sized pico-projector which can project 3D images with high brightness, contrast and resolution anytime, anywhere.

ASTRI also won a Progressive Product Award with its ultra-thin (<15mm) double-sided LCD display technology. The LCD display is powered by a single side-emitting LED backlight light source where LEDs are implanted at the edges of the light guide plate of the display embodiment. While the slim backlight module design is convenient and space saving for display application, the double-sided display technology provides easy access and efficient distribution of information to the public.

The three technologies have already been licensed to Epistar Corporation, Shenzhen ACTO Digital Video Technology Co. Limited and Shenzhen New Super-Bright LCD Display Co. Limited for commercialisation respectively. The three industrial partners, who were invited by ASTRI to jointly enter the contest, shared the honours with pleasure.

ASTRI’s Vice President and Group Director Dr Wu Enboa said, "I am delighted that ASTRI’s patent-protected technologies in SSL were honoured, especially when the products have been jointly realized by our partners. The awards duly recognised our commitment in bringing SSL technologies from laboratory to the market place."

"At ASTRI, we undertake customer oriented research and development activities and work with our industrial partners through various business models to help them step up their competitive strength by quality technology transfers," Dr Wu added.

The bi-annual contest has been held since 2006 to honour advances and breakthrough achieved by the industry in respect of LED technology development. ASTRI received awards in the contest with its high dynamic range display technology and pico-projector technology in 2006 and 2008 respectively.

This year, ASTRI was also awarded the Second CSA Council Outstanding Contribution Award in recognition of its substantial contributions to the CSA Council and the LED industry in China.
