Applications

A major goal of ASTRI is to develop high quality R&D for technology transfer to industry. Our research projects are rolled out and steered towards possible applications that are beneficial to industry as well as the community at large. Below are some examples of the many areas in which our technologies can be applied.

Green initiatives

The widespread interest in protecting and enhancing the environment has created a great demand for green technologies. In the area of energy harvesting and storage, ASTRI’s initiatives include development of Integrated Concentrating Photovoltaic Module and Advanced Lithium-ion Battery Electrode Architecture, amongst others.

Furthermore, ASTRI’s research in low-power and energy-efficient system-on-chip (SoC) designs can be widely applied in the thriving market for mobile devices and home entertainment electronics.

Environmental concerns are also driving the use of LED as a new light source. ASTRI has reaped fruits of its researches in applying LED in general lighting and other areas, and has developed the next generation AC-DC and DC-DC LED drivers to support this trend.

Our Tyre Pressure Monitoring System, which provides real-time tyre condition monitoring, won Bronze Award in the Best Green (Innovation) section of the Hong Kong ICT Awards 2012.

Medical and Healthcare

Information and communication technologies are playing an increasingly important role in supporting medical and healthcare practices. Our Bio-Medical Electronics team is working with industry partners in developing advanced healthcare and medical products and value-added bio-medical applications, including Digital Pathology System, Brain Training Device for Amblyopia Treatment, and Immersive Distractive Eyewear.

Besides, exploitation of our Modularized Ubiquitous Healthcare Electronics technologies has resulted in a variety of cost-effective healthcare products.

Our cross domain efforts have bred the development of a Tele-health Hub System which meets the needs of community nurses.

e-Learning

Among the sweeping changes across the education landscape, e-learning is phenomenal. ASTRI’s Enterprise and Consumer Electronics Group has been focusing on the development of an e-learning total solution, enabling schools to practise e-learning in classroom as well as outdoors.

Our technologies in this area have also facilitated teachers to incorporate mobile collaborative learning into curricula with ease.

Furthermore, with ASTRI’s e-Reader Annotation Technology, which is a powerful social networking annotation sharing tool, students can extend their reading and learning experiences all the way from home to school, greatly improving the effectiveness of e-learning.

Mobile communications

The far-reaching popularity of wireless devices and applications owes a lot to the mobile communications technologies that provide fast and seamless connection as well as ubiquitous access.

A leader in 4G/LTE technologies, ASTRI has not only co-developed the first commercial grade TD-LTE small cell reference design but also made significant contribution in LTE-user terminal technology.

Furthermore, our Evolved Packet Core Solution plays a major role in bridging the communications between LTE networks and core IP networks and in enabling seamless mobility.

Our researchers have also developed an Access Gateway Platform for LTE Access Networks, a cost-effective and vendor neutral networking software to connect LTE devices to the internet.

Projection, display and image processing

3D images are not only captivating audiences worldwide but also stimulating practitioners in the medical and educational fields to conceive novel ways to perform their duties. ASTRI’s 2D to 3D Real Time Video Conversion Platform can offer supremely natural and realistic 3D visual sensation by instantly converting 2D contents into 3D images. It won Grand Award and Gold Award in the Best Lifestyle category of the Hong Kong ICT Awards 2012.

Another award winning research concerns a palm-size 3D pico-projector materialised by applying ASTRI’s 3D dual-LCoS mini-projector technology. This first-of-its-kind product co-developed with an industry partner is very easy to carry and can project display as big as 60-100 inches with very low power consumption.

Furthermore, ASTRI researchers have successfully developed an Intelligent Audience Analysis System, which has been integrated with our interactive display technologies to form an intelligent display platform for commercial applications, such as intelligent public information display.

In addition, our state-of-the-art frame rate conversion technologies can greatly improve the smoothness of fast-motion TV and cinema screens. These technologies can be applied to TVs and projectors, as well as portable electronics such as smart phones, tablets and e-readers.

Data storage and analysis

Our High Performance Storage Controller Platform addresses the tremendous market demands of high performance NAND Flash storage application, especially the growing needs for mass data storage in the PC market.

Furthermore, ASTRI’s USB3.0 Application Processor is commercially ready. Its highly configurable architecture can support a wide range of applications, including storage, display and hubs.

To rise to the challenges brought to enterprises by information explosion, ASTRI has established an Exploratory Research Lab to focus on applying data-mining and cloud computing technologies to meet clients’ needs in data analysis in cost saving ways.
