Company Profile

The Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute (ASTRI) was founded by the Government of Hong Kong SAR in 2000 with a mission of enhancing Hong Kong's competitiveness in technology-based industries through applied research.

Since inception, ASTRI has been delivering world-class technologies and customer-focused R&D which cater to the needs of the industry. Our R&D efforts traverse five main technological areas:

Communications Technologies Enterprise & Consumer Electronics IC Design Material & Packaging Technologies Bio-Medical Electronics

An Exploratory Research Laboratory has also been established recently to perform research on emerging and interdisciplinary technologies.

In April 2006, ASTRI was designated the Hong Kong Research and Development Centre for Information and Communications Technologies by the Innovative and Technology Commission with special goals to perform leading-edge R&D for technology transfer to industry, develop much needed technical human resources and act as a focal point bringing together industry and university R&D assets.

Through close collaboration with the Government, industry and universities on the latest development of technologies and market trends, ASTRI has succeeded in building a portfolio of innovative projects with fruitful results.

To our customers in Hong Kong, the Chinese mainland and other parts of the world, ASTRI as their R&D partner is instrumental in increasing competitive strength and capturing business opportunities from the thriving technology market. Customers of ASTRI can draw on our resources, expertise and accomplishment, which include:

  • R&D Professionals - ASTRI has a pool of excellent researchers led by team leaders, who are prominent technologists in their fields, to carry out quality research. Currently, we have more than 550 R&D personnel, with 24% holding PhD and 55% Master's degrees.
  • Intellectual Properties - ASTRI has produced a volume of intellectual properties (IPs), including registered patents.
  • Technologies Transfers - ASTRI has been delivering world-class and useful technologies to customers in Hong Kong, the Mainland and the region continually in the form of service contracts, technology licenses and other forms of partnership.
  • Industry Collaboration Projects (ICP) Scheme - The ICP Scheme is designed specially for industry partners who want to be actively involved in a project from initiation to the eventual transfer of technology. The scheme also works to capitalize on funding and other resources from both sides to maximize return.
  • Collaboration & Partnership - ASTRI organizes visits, forums and seminars on regular basis with a view to fostering collaboration and expanding partnership between governments, industries, universities, and also local and international research counterparts.

In 2008, ASTRI started a wholly owned subsidiary, the ASTRI Science and Technology Research (Shenzhen) Company Limited, in Shenzhen to further cultivate business on the Mainland.
