ASTRI sponsors Joint School Science Exhibition for the third year

ASTRI showed its support for youth scientists and encouraged them to put innovative ideas into practical use in our daily lives by sponsoring the Joint School Science Exhibition (JSSE) for the third year running.

The 44th JSSE was held in the Central Library of Hong Kong on July 19 to 25, 2011. Adopting the theme “Science against Crimes, Trace out all the Signs”, the JSSE encouraged students to make use of their science knowledge to design security devices for crime prevention. Representatives from twenty-six local secondary schools submitted their proposals and competed for seven prizes. Their creative ideas and design models were showcased at their exhibition booths during the seven-day show for visitors to see and judges to evaluate.

Winner of the ASTRI Award – Best Presenter this year was Mr Lau Tsz Him from St. Paul’s College. He was voted to be the Best Presenter by some 30,000 visitors with his vivid presentation of “More than Floor” – a security device to be installed under the floor tiles. Hoi Ping Chamber of Commerce Secondary School was the Overall Champion with their design “Anti-Lock-Break System”. Other winning teams included First Runner Up S.K.H. Li Ping Secondary School, Second Runner Up Shatin Government Secondary School, and Most Popular Booth Belilios Public School.

JSSE has been held successively for forty-four years with the aims to arouse public interest in science, encourage scientific research and putting science into practice. It has become a flagship annual event of the academia attracting a great number of secondary schools to take part in it every year.
