LED is promising for general lighting in the near future. Compared with the traditional incandescent or fluorescent light source, LED is compact, consumes less power, and has longer life time.
ASTRI researchers have successfully made prototypes for high-defect and high-failure tolerable LED based light source for general lighting applications. The prototypes utilize technologies of cost-effective design, better thermal dissipation and self-compensation for mal-function parts to ensure reliable lighting. An effective technology platform based on the state-of-the-art packaging design, thermal and optical modelling, characterization and analysis, as well as electrical driving circuit design is developed. IP protected technologies have been applied to development of various prototypes for general lighting applications.
