High value-added manufacturing is a crucial opportunity for Hong Kong because China's immediate ascent in technology will be largely concentrated in the areas of high-value manufacturing, whereas Pearl River Delta (PRD) is a potential center for information and communications technology (ICT) manufacturing. ASTRI's Material and Packaging Technologies Group focuses on developing high-value, next-generation product, devices and component applications that are differentiated by material and packaging technologies.
The group builds upon ASTRI's existing base in photonics research and has expanded its scope to develop applications that are promising for Hong Kong or PRD in areas such as next-generation solid state lighting, electronic packaging, photonic devices, energy storage devices, advanced displays and components, etc. Building up the material and packaging technology platforms will continuously spawn new and competitive applications for the long term. The objective of the program is to lay the foundation for Hong Kong or PRD to become a major center for the design and manufacturing of next-generation devices and the key components in the ICT industries of the Greater China.
