Applications of Wireless USB Technologies for Wireless PAN Systems

Wireless Universal Serial Bus (WUSB) is a key and new application of WiMedia-based UWB technology. ASTRI is a member of WiMedia and USB Implementer Forum (USB-IF), the industry group which is responsible for the definition of USB 1.x and 2.0 standards. USB-IF has recently released a Certified Wireless USB 1.0 Standard, applying a USB-like protocol over WiMedia MAC and PHY protocol stacks to support wireless application scenarios of USB devices. Exploiting UWB's 480Mbps ultra fast connection speed, WUSB is the first high-speed personal wireless technology capable of addressing the networking and communications needs of multimedia consumer electronics, PC peripherals, and mobile devices.

ASTRI#39;s UWB technologies support WUSB standard-compliant devices and connect these USB devices to host wirelessly, using WUSB Wire Adaptors (WA) and/or WUSB device hubs. The focus of ASTRI#39;s WUSB R&D is to create enabling technologies and solutions for the growing multimedia portable consumer electronics, as well as the enormous PC peripheral device markets.

ASTRI is developing world-class intellectual property rights and know-how in this area covering passive, active, and multiple antennas.

ASTRI#39;s WUSB technologies support common "pairing" relationship and the host-to-device WUSB mode, which is similar to traditional USB host and device relationship. Our R&D efforts also involve WUSB Dual Role Device (DRD). Similar to USB On-the-Go (OTG) mode, DRD allows a device to dynamically switch between being the host or the device, or support simultaneous host-to-device and device-to-host connections (duplex).

Our WUSB technologies will include automatic device recognition and Plug-and-Play capabilities with a strong intrinsic 128-bit encryption algorithm for guaranteed security in wireless data delivery. In addition, ASTRI has developed patent-pending multi-hop and QoS protocols to extend wireless connectivity and to enhance QoS performance among multiple WUSB hosts and devices.

Besides traditional USB cable replacement, ASTRI has created advanced WUSB technologies to enable new applications that were not available in wired USB scenarios:

~ Multi-hop mesh networking for WUSB
~ Devices supporting multiple WUSB hosts
~ Advanced applications of WUSB dual role devices
