Wi-Fi
is the dominant wireless data access technology
at home, at work and in public areas. In the latter
case, there has been an on-going massive growth
in worldwide Wi-Fi hot spot deployment, either by
municipalities or by commercial providers. A handset
that can be used at home, in the office, and at
an ever-growing number of hot spots is a very attractive
proposition to end users.
ASTRI's
R&D in Voice over WLAN (VoWLAN) has already
offered a robust and feature-rich Wi-Fi phone solution,
W-iSIP, for the home and enterprise
market segments. To take advantage of the growth
of public Wi-Fi coverage, ASTRI has expanded this
solution into the wireless service provider segment.

Boingo
Wireless Inc. is the leading aggregator of Wi-Fi network
operators, with over 60,000 hot spots worldwide and comprehensive
roaming support for mobile devices. This roaming support
– in the form of the Boingo Wi-Fi Embedded Toolkit –
enables ASTRI to seamlessly integrate public hot spot
identification and authentication into the mobile device
user experience.
The
hot-spot-enabled W-iSIP has addressed
the well-known challenges of hot spot authentication,
session persistence, and inter-hot spot session management,
all under the resource constraints of a battery-powered
embedded system. It is the perfect platform to facilitate
this win-win partnership between a handset vendor and
Boingo Wireless.
W-iSIP,
based on the standard Voice over IP protocol SIP, enables
rapid entry into the Wi-Fi handset market, a market already
recognized by brand-name vendors. Knowing that time-to-market
is very critical, the W-iSIP reference
design and software toolkit offer ODM/OEM a cost-effective
way to produce a handset with vendor-specific user experience
and phone features.
