With
the proliferation of Internet and media applications, content
owners and service providers need to consider new IP based
media distribution technologies. The embedded Peer-to-Peer
media distribution technology is the only viable solution
meeting the challenging requirements of mass media streaming
over Internet.
In
the client-server architecture, all contents are sent directly
from server to client, whereas in the P2P architecture,
majority of nodes receive content from peer nodes and then
forward the content to other peers. By utilizing peer nodes'
computational power and uplink bandwidth, the requirement
on server hardware and its uplink bandwidth can be dramatically
reduced.
Compared
to open PC environment, an embedded device provides much
tighter control over the system. This unique advantage can
improve the content security and QoS. ASTRI's eP2P technology
combines the power of P2P content distribution technology
with the unique advantages of embedded devices to provide
an efficient and secure platform for content distribution.
It can be embedded into any consumer electronic devices
or use as software on PCs for distributing media content
over IP network. |

| ASTRI's
eP2P technologies support both real-time IPTV streaming as
well as video-on-demand applications. It has the following
advantages: |
| |
| • |
Scalability:
It can support thousands of users with low source-node
bandwidth. |
| • |
Efficiency:
Users can start playing the media with low delay. |
| • |
Robust
to peer failure: Peer failure does not seriously
affect the quality of received media. |
| • |
Error
recovery to source failure: When a source fails,
peers can automate switch to other sources which
broadcast the same channel. |
| • |
User
interactivity: Users can control any time the
point of playing of the media. |

P2P
Real-time IPTV platform
The TV signal is first encoded and compressed in real time
and streamed to distributed users in the Internet in a peer-to-peer
manner. The P2P delivery mesh is computed automatically
depending on network traffic condition and congestion.
P2P
Movie-On-Demand platform
In this platform, peers may request any movies from the
server at any time. As the movie is being played, users
may interact with the movie using functionalities such as
pause, stop, restart, jump forward/backward. Each peer has
a finite buffer at hard disk to buffer the media for a certain
period of time before discarding it. The buffered data can
then be used to serve other peers in the system.
